    • The third bond has caused much trouble and confusion. Printed inKnorr,p. 27, one finds: 26 August 1794. Hezekiah Featherston and NancyTarpley, dau. JohnTarple. Sur. Charles Featherston. Married 28 Augustby Rev. Edward Almond. p. 212 There is considerable amounty of materialin the Charlotte County records that shows that the Nancy Tarpley whomarried Hezekiah Featherston, was the daughter of James Tarpley. In theCourt Order Books of August 1796 are two suits in which HezekiahFeatherston and Nancy his wife sued the executors of James Tarpley, deceased, and the heirs of James Tarpley.
One the Featherstons were joined by John Eudaly and Mary his wife. Maryis known to have been a daughter of James Tarpley. There is a smiliarsuit in May 1798. When James Tarpley made his wil he named only hissonsand his married daughters but his son William Tarpley made his willand named all his siblings, including a Nancy Tarpley. Finally, aindenture, dated 1806, between Joseph Friend and the legatees of theestate of James Tarpley, deceased, includes among the legatees 'theheirs of Betsy Miller and Nancy Featherston, who are deceased.' Whythen did the marriage bond typescript say that Nancy Tarpley was thedaughter of John? Examination of the original bond shows a smallenclosed scrap of paper which says: 'Ann Tarpley was born 2 day of July1769'. [Signed] John Tarpley. August 26 Witnessed Carloss (X)Featherston 94 Agnes (X) Tarpley Thereis nowhere any statement that John Tarpley is Ann/Nancy Tarpley'sfather. The relationship was inferred from John Tarpley's sendingastatement to show that Nancy was of age to give her own consent. NancyTarpley's father, James Tarpley, was dead. John Tarpley was her uncle.source: The Virginia Genealogist Vol. 23, No. 1 - Jan/Mar 1979
