    • Mr. Featherston, a former Douglas resident, died as a result of a heartattack, in New York City. He was a professor at Columbia University atthe time of his death. Mr. Featherston was born to Mary B. and RobertL. Featherston near Bethelhem, Iowa. He grew to manhood in and aroundthat vicinity. He attended high school and graduated in the spring of1917 at Corydon, Ia, valedictorian of his class and earning ascholarship to Grinnell College. He then moved with his parents toConverse County, Wyoming and in the fall and winter of 1917-18 taught asmall school a few miles east of Douglas. He attended Grinnell Collegein 1918-19 and in the fall of 1920 he enrolled at the University ofWyoming and finished his education there in 1924. He taught at theuniversity while studying and was sent to South America as a botanist bythe Field Museum of Chicago during his junior year. After graduating hetaught one year in the Laramie High School while working on his master'sdegree in education. He was then elected to the position ofSuperintendent of Schools in Evanston, Wyo., a position he held forseveral years. At this time he was the youngest superintendent in theState of Wyoming. During this time he spent his summer continuing hisstudies and in due time received his Ph.D. from Columbia University, NewYork City.

      In the early 1930s he served as director of secondary curriculum of thepublic schools for the City of Los Angeles, Calif. In 1935 Dr.Featherston went back to Columbia as a professor of education in theTeachers' College. During World War II he served in the U.S. Army inEngland and Belgium in the field of military government. At the close ofhostilities he was sent to Vienna, Austria, under Gen. Mark Clark andwas in charge of restoring the schools, libraries, art and literature ofthe allied sector of that country. While in this service he was promotedto the rank of Lt. Colonel. Also while in Vienna he was made an honorarymember of the University of Vienna. After his discharge he returned tohis professorship at Columbia and was head of the Department of SpecialEducation, Teachers' College, Columbia University. Survivors includehis father and step-mother; two brothers, Lester of Douglas and Lloyd ofChicago; and two sisters, Mrs. S. E. Moore of Chillicothe, Mo., and Mrs.J. W. Hughes of Richland, Wash. Information was obtained from hisobituary in the Douglas Budget April 19, 1951.
