'Man Dies After Shootout With Police'

Fred Featherston was a familiar sight around the Gardenside ShoppingPlaza, always handing out quarters to children and smiling as they ranoff to buy candy or ice cream.

But police say the 88-year-old Featherston began firing through the doorof his apartment, wounded a policeman and eventually died himself assome 50 police stormed his second-story apartment, firing multiplerounds through his door and windows. 'Sickening.' said an apartmentresident who witnessed the battle. 'You should have seen it --50 cops, two fire trucks, tear gas everywhere that that old man by himself inthat apartment. If they'd just gone away and left him alone, he wouldhave come out and everything would have been OK.'

Authorities said the trouble started when policeman neighbor Roy Mardiswent to investigate after he heard Featherston making loud noises insidehis apartment. Featherston told him to get away from his locked door orhe would shoot, so he called another officer to help and they were metwith a shotgun blast through the door, according to police spokesman,Joe Catt. Catt said reinforcements were called in and bullhorns wereused to try to coax Featherston into surrendering. After an officer waswounded in the leg, police said they stormed the apartment and found thebody of Featherston, the victim of three bullet wounds.

People at the shopping center expressed shock at his death. Featherstonwas accustomed to arrive by bus early every morning and stayed untillate afternoon. Without fail he ate breakfast at the same restaurant, had a doughnut and coffee at a doughnut shop later, and would thentinker around a hardware store, listening to little silver dinner bellshe often bought as gifts for friends.

Helen Wagner, 18, a waitress at the doughnut shop, said the tragedyresulted from an eviction notice Featherstone had received earlier inthe week. The apartment owners planned to remodel the building, shesaid, and had sent eviction notices to the residents. 'This was hishome,' Miss Wagner said. 'the last time I saw him was Sunday morning.Something was bothering him I could tell. I asked him what was wrong. He said, 'The owner keeps harassing me about my apartment, I don'tunderstand. I paid my rent' 'Poor Gramps didn't understand thenotice.'

Jane Deaton, a restaurant waitress, said she keeps in her purse aChristmas card Featherston sent her this past February. 'He said hewanted to be the first to send me a Christmas card this year,' she said.'I really loved that old man.' June Dyton, a sales clerk at thehardware store, said Featherston spent hours tinkling with the littlesilver dinner bells. 'I'll ever forget that sound,' she said.
