FUNERAL OF ONE OF THE OLDEST ROTHERHITHIANS
The death has occured of one of Rotherhithe's oldest inhabitants, Frank Featherstone, of 6 Canute Street, who had attained his ninetieth year; and his funeral took place at Nunhead on Wednesday of last week.
Mr.Featherstone was a remarkable man, physically and mentally, for his age, and until three days before his death he was apparently in his normal health.
The deceased had been pensioned by the L.C.C. for about twenty years. For a long period he was employed at Southwark Park to tend the water fowl and other birds, including pigeons, pheasants and guinea fowl, which sported in large numbers in the lake or about its islands before boating was introduced there. Feeding time for these birds was one of the "sights" of the park. At that period, Mr Featherstone used to relate, some of the park keepers wore uniform resembling that of the modern police constable.
A native of Rotherhithe, Mr Featherstone took an intelligent interest in the affairs of the Borough, and was actively associated with the Labour Protection League - of which he was one of the oldest members - and the Liberal Association. He also helped in promoting the erection of the memorial near Crystal Bridge to the late Father Thomas, of St. Katherine's, Rotherhithe.
Mr. Featherstone, whose wife predeceased him a good many years is survived by three sons, who wish, through us, to thank friends and neighbours for flowers and sympathetic messages on the occasion of their father's burial.
