    'Veta F. Sutherland, 89, of Doniphan, Missouri, died July 1, 2008, at her residence. Mrs. Sutherland was born July 15, 1918, in Ripley County, Missouri. A former schoolteacher, Veta taught in several one-room rural schools and during World War II while her husband was overseas, she was a “Rosie the Riveter” working on an airplane assembly line in California. She was a bookkeeper for a local lumberyard and a caseworker for Family Services. In 1956 she joined her husband to create the AG Market, which was an important part of Doniphan for more than 26 years. After the sale of the store, she did sewing and needlework as long as her health permitted. She was a contestant in the Pillsbury Bake Off three times, winning a second prize in the cake category. Veta and Ed were very honored to serve as Grand Marshals of the 2004 Doniphan Labor Day Parade. They gave love, time and support to many young people over the years. On February 14, 1941, she was married to Edwin Sutherland at East Prairie, Missouri. He survives. Also surviving are one sister, Lois Madsen of Binghampton, New York, one brother, Jim Featherston of Rose Bud, Missouri, and several nieces and nephews who loved her very much. Mrs. Sutherland was preceded in death by her parents, Henry Featherston and Etta Rideout Featherston, two sisters, Clarice Braschler and Dorothy Lamb, and two brothers, Charles Featherston and E. E. “Gene” Featherston. The funeral service will be at the First Church of God in Doniphan with Brother Larry Bashaw officiating.'

    'Doniphan--Henry M. Featherston, 85 of 506 Pine Street died near his home of an apparent heart attack. Born November 3, 1886 at Hickman County, Kentucky, Mr. Featherston had resided in Ripley County for 75 years. He was a retired realtor, a former Doniphan city councilman and served on the first Ripley County Selective Service Board for 25 years. Mr. Featherston was a charter member of the Church of God and supervised construction of the present church building. He was a former trustee and Sunday school teacher for the church. On November 29, 1909 he married Etta Rideout in West Plains and she died in 1960. Surviving are: sons, Charles Featherston of Poplar Bluff, Gene Featherston of Detroit, Michigan, and Jim Featherston of St. Louis; daughters, Mrs. Clarice Braschler and Mrs. Veta Sutherland, both of Doniphan, Mrs. Dorothy Lamb of Ventura, California and Mrs. Lois Madsen of Albertson, New York; 15 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. Mr. Featherston funeral will be at the Doniphan Church of God. The Rev. H. Eugene Ramsey will officiate. The Edwards Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.'

    Obituary--Daily American Republic--Poplar Bluff, Missouri--31 May 1960 'Doniphan--Mrs. Etta Frances Featherston, well known Doniphan resident, died at 1:30 Monday morning at the Lucy Lee Hospital in Poplar Bluff after being a patient there six weeks. She had been in poor health six months and was 73 years of age. Born March 9, 1887 in Howell County, Mrs. Featherston was a resident of Ripley County 51 years. She was married November 24, 1909 to Henry Featherston at Koshkonong and was a member of the Church of God for 54 years. The Featherston home is at 502 First Street. She leaves her husband, a retired real estate man; four daughters, Mrs. Arnold Braschler, and Mrs. Edwin Sutherland, both of Doniphan; Mrs. John Lybarger of Ventura, California and Mrs. V.H. Madsen of New York; three sons, Charles of Doniphan, Gene of Brentwood and Jim of Poplar Bluff; one brother, Tom Rideout of West Plains; 15 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Funeral services were to be held at the Doniphan Church of God, the Rev. Jesse Woodward officiating. Edwards service.'

    In 1954 Henry and Etta attended a Featherston Family Reunion in Hickman County, Kentucky. They took two grandchildren with them, Ron Featherston and Arnita Braschler.

    In Bruce's book, name is listed as Christopher Columbus; not Columbus Cicero.

    Columbus Featherston, was born in 1849 in Tennessee. As a widower with three children, Charlotte, George and Nettie, Columbus married Martha Garrison. Their son, Henry, was born in Kentucky in 1886. They had four additional sons and daughters in this family: Cicero, Ora, Minnie and Jessie.

    Columbus, moved the family by covered wagon to Piedmont, Missouri in 1890 traveling with some of his wife Martha's family. He died shortly thereafter of typhoid fever. Henry's mother, Martha Garrison Featherston, then moved the family, with her brothers, Sidney and Will Garrison's families, to Ripley County where they settled.

    Lois (grand-daughter) said he is buried in an unmarked grave in Piedmont, Wayne County, Missouri on his farm (listed in Wayne County tax records) and that he died of typhoid fever. The courthouse house has burned twice, the newspaper records have been burned there are no records to be found. Several members of the family have tried without success.

    Various sources has his name as Christopher Columbus and Columbus Christopher. His name on his son's birth certificate, Henry Marion, is Columbus Cicero. This certificate was attested to by affidavit of Mary E. Garrison, Aunt, Age 80 in 12/9/1942, Modern Worldview of America Comp.No. 4516 on 6/2/1906, Affadavit of H.C. Berry, non relative age 74 on 12/30/1942. His aunt Mary Frances married a Berry so this must be some of her in-laws. The name when he and Martha married was C.C. Featherston and the same name was used in the 1880 U.S. Census. In 1850 U.S. Census , he is listed as Lumbus.

    Have a tax receipt from C. C. Featherston in Wayne County, Missouri for 1891 and the tax receipt in 1892 is from Martha Featherston, CC's wife. Records have since burned and nothing is available.

    Martha was the second child. A brother named Samuel Y. Garrison lived only six months and died 29 Dec 1854. Birth noted in the Allen County website (Free Births 1852-1861), Martha A. daughter of C.A. Garrison and Emily Stamps near Scottsville. Marriage was conducted at her residence according to Marriage Record.

    According to Jim Featherston, Martha suffered from asthma. After the family group left Kentucky, their ultimate goal was Ripley County, Missouri but their immediate goal was to find a place where Martha had fewer problems breathing. They spent about a year in the Conway, Arkansas area and were enroute to Ripley County via Wayne County with the plan of reaching Ripley County and building a home for Martha to take her out of the evening air. Her husband, C. C. Featherston became ill with typhoid and died in Wayne County. C.C. owned land in 1890 in Wayne County and additional records were destroyed twice by fire and the newspapers records also were destroyed by fire. The county seat has been rebuilt and relocated and no records remain.

    Re:  Evidence for Parents of  John Henry Featherston as well as marriage.  There does not exist definitive date proof for birth, marriage and death of John Henry Featherston and Nancy Pressgrove.  However there is much circumstantial evidence. 

    The Shelby County, Illinois Court case records for the File: John H. Featherston for Assault in 1851 located in the Illinois State Archives Box/Folder 09/039 gives many names of family members however the case does not spell out the relationships but the preponderance of evidence is significant. 

    Summary of case:  People vs John H. Featherston (used a knife with a 3 inch blade)  Charged with assault upon the body of Willis Hinton whereas he(Willis)  received a bodily injury --John H. ordered to jail of Shelby County until such a day as court instructs otherwise .  12 Oct 1850 True bill found by Grand Jury; Many witnesses.  Arrested and required to post bond of $500.00.  21 Oct 1850 Appeared in court, John H. Featherston, Andrew J. Featherston, William Pressgrove, Joseph H. Featherston and Jesse O. Soapes agreed to $500.00 to be used as default if they fail to appear.

    Joseph Henry Featherston--brother of John H.; born 8 Mar 1829 in Robertson County, Tennessee In the 1850 U.S. Census, he is living with his father Burrell and mother Rebecca in Becks Creek, Shelby County, Illinois Moved  with his father Burrell/Burwell to Warren County, Mississippi where he is located in the 1760 U.S. Census. He died in Warren County, Mississippi in 1878.   Father Burrell died in Warren County, Mississippi in 1874. Another brother, Rev. Francis Marion Featherston resided in Warren County, Mississippi at the time..

    Jesse O. Soapes (son-in-law married John H.'s oldest child, Rebecca) living in Beck's Creek, Shelby County, Illinois in 1850. In the 1860 Census, he relocated back to Bedford County, Tennessee. In 1870 census he is still in Bedford county, Tennessee; in the 1880 census, Jessee and Rebecca are living in Somervell County, Texas. Both died in Texas.

    On the 1850 Non-Population Schedules for Clinton County, P. O. Caryle John Henry had listed 140 acres of improved land; 24 unimproved. Cash Value of Far $5000 or $8000 (can't be sure); no livestock, 600 wheat bushels, 1500 bu of Corn and 500 oats or barley.
