    Notes:

    Anecdote:
There were extensive disturbances in and around Castlepollard in 1881.

Sarah gave her consent to the marriage of Sarah Margaret, her daughter, to John Strong in Summer Hill, Sydney in 1887, therefore she was still alive. I believe that William was either dead or in Ireland, otherwise he would have been the one giving consent.
I have a postcard written 'To Aunt Sarah from M M MacCullagh with best wishes'. How are they connected? Perhaps through Holmes in Ireland as I have a postcard of Carlanstown with MacCullagh family in front, plus there are other photos of MacCullagh's.

'To Dear Grandma...Uncle John, Annie... yours lovingly James & Florrie, Reggie. I think their surname was Flack 1910 Goulburn.

    Residence:
House and 31 acres land, tenant to Lord Longford

    Anecdote:
From RCB Dublin researched by Barbara Creggy:-
    Protestants in Mayne Easter 1818
Michael Fetherston - 5 family members

    From Electors List of 1829:-
'FETHERSTON, Mic., of Carne or Kintogher, House and townland LandCarn or Kintoghter barony DemiforeTen Pounds'.

Also on 1832 Electors List with other Fetherstons. He is shown as having lands in Carn and Kintogher, the latter being a 'place-name' in the townland of Carn. A togher was a roadway through a swampy area,so literally, it meant the head of the road. Kintogher is no longer in use and had been forgotten as a place name. Ten pounds was a reasonable valuation, and would have entitled him to a vote for a Member of Parliament at Westminster.

    In the Killafree Churchyard, Castlepollard:-
'This Stone was erected by Michael Fetherston in memory of his Father Michael his children and his beloved wife who dep this life Oct 151835 aged 64 years.'

His gravestone has very interesting markings on it. I’m working on itreferring to Michael's wife who d.15 Oct 1835 67 yrs, their children and his father Michael. There is a possibility that this Michael isactually the brother of William Fetherston b.c1815 and not his father.

Michael was a member of Castlepollard Masonic Lodge No.445, the warrant for which was dated 4th July 1816. He was registered on the same date. This explains the symbols on his gravestone.

He was a tenant on Lord Longford's Estate (the Pakenham's), he held land and house in the townland of Carn.
He erected the gravestone of his father Michael.

In the 1854 Griffith's Valuation of Ireland, Co. Westmeath:-
Fetherston, Michael Carn Mayne, Co. Westmeath

I believe this is the correct Michael. He was a tenant in the townland of Carn, Parish of Mayne. Michael Conlon has supplied the relavent page from Griffith's Valuation plus a map:-
10 a Michael Fetherston House, offices and land.
    31 acres 2 roods 10 perches. Valuation 14.10.0 pounds Buildings 1.0.0.pounds.

    Rateable Property 15.10.0 pounds

'As first quality land was approx. valued at 1 pound per acre, the land was of reasonable quality.'

The map shows Carn highlighted in orange. The Fetherston holding is outlined in green, with an arrow pointing to the house ('a') on the roadside. Mr Conlon believes a Coghlan family was in it after the Fetherston's, then a Gilmer family.

Interesting that his near neighbours included Richard Holmes and a John Robinson. Other tenants at Carn included Ball, Brady, Flaherty, Fitzsimmons, De Burgh, Riggs, Coghlan, Pakenham, and Cramer.

Michael married (Unknown) (Unknown). (Unknown) was born about 1771; died on 15 Oct 1835 in Westmeath, Ireland; was buried after 15 Oct 1835 in Killafree Churchyard, Castlepollard, Co Westmeath, Ireland. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
