      The Search for my Ancestors
Warwick Empson writes about the early stages of his family research
For many years, the consensus within my Empson family, was that my GGG/father was one Richard Empson. Due to this family myth, I could not take my researches beyond his son, Charles Empson. While I possessed a copy of Charles's Marriage Certificate, no parents were mentioned, although I had gathered a significant amount of data on Charles and his wife Louisa Howard.
Charles left England on the ship "London" on Dec. 29th. 1841 at the age of 22, bound for Nelson NZ. On his departure, he was given a Bible by his sister Mary Ann.
It was also known from family records that Charles ostensibly had brothers, or cousins, Frederick and Henry. Frederick, being an Architect of Birmingham, and Henry a Lawyer. It was also known from records that the mythical Richard was a lawyer who had a practice in Bath and also Leamington. Other than more rather vague information I could get no further.
However with Charles' future wife, Louisa Howard, 1 knew considerably more. She and her family left England also in 1841, on the ship "Prince Rupert" However their ship foundered at the Cape of Good Hope, and after some months delay in South Africa continued their trip to NZ, in the ship "Antilia". Louisa was six years old at the time. She was to marry Charles Empson when she was 18 and he 33.

This indenture made the (blank) day of (blank) one thousand eight hundred and seventy.
Between Charles Empson of the district of Louavin?(I think this is Louvain) In the province Marlborough and colony of New Zealand. Gentleman of the first part, Maria Clark of Bradford in the County of Middlesex widow of the second part, Frederick Empson of Birmingham in the county of Warwick, Architect of the third part and Stanley Slocombe of Dracol Lodge … in the County of Surrey, merchant of the fourth part.
Whereas Martha Greenhill of Isleworth in the County of Middlesex, widow being served?? in her demense as of fee according to the custom of the Manor of Isleworth Syon?? in the said County of the copyholds hereditaments and premises hereinafter particularly reci...ed and described to have been surrendered to the use of the said Stanley Slocombe his heirs and assigns made and published her last Will and Testament in … bearing date the seventy third day of July, one thousand eight hundred and seventy nine (after this document was made)in such manner and form as the law proscribed for passing real estate of inheritance whereby she left amongst other things the whole of her copy hold Estates to John and Mary Ann the son and daughter of Mr William Featherston of Isleworth aforesaid and she thereby decided that the said Mary Ann Featherston with her brother was not to be put into possession of the copyhold estates until they were twenty four years of age at which it was to become theirs or the division?? Of his or her children on failure of which the whole to be sold and the produce to be divided as ene.....
And Whereas the said testatrix (Martha Greenhill of Isleworth)departed this life without having revoked the said device of the said copyhold hereditaments and leaving John Featherston the only son of William Featherston in her said will named and the said Mary Ann Featherston who afterwards intermarried with William Charles Empson him surviving.
And Whereas at a general court of the said Manor held on the fifth day of November, one thousand eight hundred and fourteen the said John Featherston was admitted tenant to one equal undivided moiety (Apparently John became age 24 and claimed his inheritance at this time.)
      (2)
of (amongst other hereditaments) the said copyhold hereditaments to hold to him the said John Featherston his heirs and assigns for ever or such other estate term?? and interest as was devised to him by the said Will of the said Martha Greenhill.
And Whereas the said John Featherston shortly afterwards assumed and was thenceforth known by the name of Featherstonhaugh. [This is in 1814)
And Whereas at a special court of the said Manor held on the third day of May one thousand eight hundred and seventy one [that date doesn't seem correct; it is after this document was drawn up] the said John Featherstonhaugh suffered a recovery of the said one equal undivided moiety of (amongst other hereditaments) the said copyhold hereditaments whereby the same were limited and assured to the use of the said John Featherstonhaugh his heirs and assigns for ever. And thereupon the said John Featherstonhaugh was admitted to the same premises to hold the same to him and his heirs and assigns for ever according to the custom of the said Manor. [This sounds like some further probating of the will.]
And Whereas the said John Featherstonhaugh made and published his last will and testament in writing bearing date the thirtieth day of September, one thousand eight hundred and twenty eight in such manner and form as the Law then required for passing real estate of inheritance whereby after the said Testator [John Featherstonehaugh) bequeathing certain specific Legacies devised and bequeathed all and singular his real and the rest and residue of his personal estate (except such specific Legacies as was thereafter mentioned) unto Thomas Dagnall?? George Clark and John James Clark to hold to them their heirs executors administrators and assigns according to the several natures?? and qualities thereof upon certain Estates for the benefit of his (the said Testator's)wife since deceased during her life as therein mentioned. And the said Testator from and after the decease or his said wife gave (amongst other things) unto the said George Clark, and Ellen his wife their respective assigns during their respective natural lives his rents of the said copyhold [apparently this was property which paid rents to John Faetherstonehaugh)
      (3).
hereditaments by the description of his the said Testator)rents of the houses opposite the Bell Inn at Hounslow and from and after the decease of the survivor of them the said George Clark and Ellen his wife the said Testator gave and devised his moiety of the said houses and premises opposite the Bell Inn
